Highland Music Trust

Highland Music Trust (Scottish Charity SC028065), based in Inverness, Scotland, is a charitable trust established for the encouragement of Scottish national and traditional music.

The Athole Collection Recognised as one of the principal sources in this field, this classic collection of 870 strathspeys, reels, jigs, hornpipes and country dances was published by James Stewart Robertson of Edradynate, Perthshire, in 1884 and reprinted by Highland Music Trust in 2008. The Shepherd Collections William Shepherd (17?? - 1812), of Edinburgh's First Collection was printed for him about 1793. In 1796 he began business as a music seller in partnership with Nathaniel Gow, trading as Gow & Shepherd, and the Second Collection was published by the firm in the early 1800s. The Collections are available here as free downloads in PDF form.

The Pringle Collections John Pringle, born c. 1770, fiddler-composer of Edinburgh, published 2 collections: A Collection of Reels Strathspeys & Jigs (Edinburgh, 1801), Printed & Sold by J. Hamilton, No. 24 North Bridge Street, and A Second Collection of Strathspeys, Reels, Jiggs &c (Edinburgh, date unknown) Printed for the Author, to be had at his Lodgings, No 16 Rose Street. The Petrie Collections Robert Petrie (1767-1830) was born in Kirkmichael, Perthshire. Glen writes "There is little known of his early history; but he was regarded in and about his native place as an excellent violin player, although from his personal habits and propensities he has been described as a "ne’er-dae-weel"". The Macintyre Collections Duncan Macintyre (c1767-c1807) appears to have originated in Perthshire, and may have been acquainted with the Gow family, for they published some of his compositions. He went to live in London and described himself as a Teacher of Scotch Dancing. He published his Collection of his own tunes in London in 1794.
